Cold Black Chair
Full disclosure, I own a black leather chair in which I spend altogether too much time, staring at “the screen.” The song is about how much better my life is when I get the hell out of that chair, or any other comfy situation, and get on with life. For me that means focusing on the people who matter most to me. Topping that list is my lovely wife and best friend, Nancy McGovern.
It was Brett’s idea to funk it up and turn the bridge it into a fugue. I remember saying, “What could possibly go wrong?” Granted, it’s not exactly Blues orthodoxy, but it does have a certain “churchy” feel to it. Moreover, it’s another example of the experimentation we were committed to doing on this album – plus, we had my daughters, whose voices made this part magic.
Brett lays down the jumpy guitar part with Sarah Thawer on drums and Charles Collymore on bass. Jesse Whiteley played the B3 and we were going to just leave it in the background. But during the mix, Brett and I re-discovered Jesse cutting loose in what would have been the third verse. We loved it and featured it in the final version. Once again, Sergio Faluotico adds a bit of sugar and spicy on percussion.
lyrics
Cold Black Chair
(Wayne S. Roberts, John Crosbie,
Brett MacMillan)
Verse
I’m sittin’ here in this
cold black chair
Waitin for the world
gonna spin somewhere
My head is ringing,
voices singing to me
Man, why are you sittin’ there
Chorus
Well, I got me a plan in mind
Oh I know just what to do
I’m gonna seek my that treasure
and I’ll find …
Know I’ll be findin’ you
Verse
I should burn me up
that cold black chair
See them Flames up risin’
in the open air
Well, now it starts me choking,
I get that joke and
I’m the only body that cares
Chorus
Keyboard Solo
Chorus
Bridge
But there’s always a fear and a scare
Keepin’ me here from there
Gotta be that cold black chair
Gotta be that cold black chair
Verse
I dream you on that cold black chair
I see you running your fingers through your soft brown hair
You’re kickin’ your heels,
spinnin’ my wheels
Now I feel the heat n the air
Chorus
So I got me a plan in mind
WelI know just what to do
I’m gonna seek my that treasure
and I’ll find …
I know my treasure is you
