I wrote this autobiographical song in mid-2019 with plans for it to appear on my third album, Three's a Charm. But it needed a certain something so, I shared the demo with Ralph MacDonald. He and I had collaborated a few years back on "Brakeman," which eventually won an Independent Music Award for best Blues song in 2013.

Ralph came through with an amazing arrangement and then assembled a killer rhythm section, featuring Canadian country music star Sean Burns on bass and Tim Brown on sticks. We all gathered in Toronto to lay it down at the Meatlocker.

It has since won accolades for songwriting but not before it was the inspiration for a cinematic video created Montreal-based director Mark Pragai.

Mark and I know each other through my oldest friend and Mark's uncle, Frank Pragai. Mark quickly embraced the poignancy in the song and began work on story boards, set development and crew assembly.

Over two wickedly frigid January nights in Montreal's West Island, Son, Mark, and his crew of 12 inspired and incredible pros shot the video.
The result has been an unequivocal success, winning on-going air-play, fan praise, and multiple awards. Much gratitude and love to Mark and his incredibly talented Montreal crew for creating this amazing motion picture.

lyrics

Tied Up in a Song

(verse)
My mother tells a tale
Of an old violin
Played by her father
Tucked under his chin
When his own father died
He put that fiddle away
“I took it up for my mother
But she never heard me play.”

(verse)
My mother saw a time
When her husband ran off
Left ‘er four little children
‘and some piss in the pot
Well he brag and he boasted
Until he crashed to the ground
It mighta made some noise
By we never heard a sound

Myths and memories
Now and gone
The threads of my lifetime
Get tied up in a song …
They get tied up in a song

(verse)
My mother shares the grief
‘bout a son who got lost
He gave up his love
But he didn’t count the cost
Gotta sister whose mind
Is all bitter and broken
She buried her name
So it never would be spoken

(verse)
Still, my mother lives a truth
‘Bout her never givin’ up
No matter how much you give
You can never give enough
(That’s what she told me)
You can whine and wail
You can buckle and bend
Don’t you ever dare break
‘til that bittersweet end

(chorus)
Myths and Memories
Now and gone
The threads of my lifetime
Get tied up in a song …
They get tied up in a song
